(One day, weekly) Small Jazz Combo Improvisation classes for Middle and High School students are held at the UAA Arts Building in rented classroom space during the school year on Friday afternoons from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced sections are offered. Students work in small groups of 6-10 members. They mentor with Alaska Jazz Master artists/educators including: John Damberg, and Mark Manners. Topics covered include: basic to advanced improvisation skills development, music theory, song forms, Jazz History, repertoire, teaming skills, and developing music business skills. Students perform at least one recital concert per semester during the school year. Brochure/Application.

Beginning Ensemble
This beginning section is for students just beginning to improvise. Students need to know the notes on their instrument, be able to read musc and play at least six major scales. This class will focus on developing basic improvisation skills including: music interval, chord, blues, major & minor scales, and key center recognition. Students will explore five songs in the 12 bar blues form in different rhythmic feels including: Funk, Swing, Slow Blues, Bossa Nova, and New Orleans 2nd Line Style March.

The Intermediate/advanced sections are for students who have past experience improvising in a school group or an AJW group. They need to prove, via the placement audition, they have mastered the basic improvisational skills covered in the AJW Beginning section. These sections focus on soloing over more advanced song forms, chord changes and rhythm styles.

Middle and High School students receive 20 hours of instruction four hours per day Monday through Friday in small combo settings from the Alaska Jazz Master Artists/Instructors listed above for each specific Ensemble. Student ensembles are featured in a Friday evening Student Recital and the AJW Faculty is featured in the Saturday evening Faculty Concert. Students are required to attend their recital concert; and invited to attend the Faculty Jazz concert, a ticket for the student is included in the tuition. These concerts are open to the general public and are well attended. The average attendance for the Student Recitals ranges from 80-125 people. The attendance for the Guest Artist Concert ranges from 150-245 people. Classes and concerts are held at the UAA Arts Building.

Tuesday Intermediate Jazz Class
(One day, weekly)
Small Jazz Combo Improvisation classes for Middle and High School students, of intermediate ability, taught by Alaska Jazz Workshop instructor Mark Manners. Classes held at 3311 Wesleyan Drive, Anchorage AK (off Northern Lights Blvd) Current time & dates: 7-9pm; TBA.

Cost is $30 per class. For flexible payment options talk with instructor. There are openings for wind players, bass players, possibly a drummer and a guitar player. Monday Night
Adult Small Jazz Combo Improv
7-9pm, Currently Jan. 9-April 30, 2012

For beginning to intermediate level instrumentalists and volcalists of all types who enjoy playing fun, exciting music in a small band setting of 4-8 members. The class will focus on developing song repertoire in a wide variety of styles including: Jazz, Blues, Latin, Funk & Pop. Students will have extensive hands on opportunities to develop their creative music skills and inner expressive musical vocabulary through improvisation and music theory skill building exercises. They will also build new song repertoire and group teaming skills by rehearsing and performing as a band. Weekly assignments will be given to promote learing new vocabulary, song repertoire and developing improvisation skills.

Students must be able to read music at a beginning to intermediate level, know the notes on their instruments, play the major scales, want to learn how to improvise, and be able to attend the majority of the class sessions.
